DEATH OF A.R. PENCK

DEATH OF A.R. PENCK

The Fondation Maeght regrets to announce the death of A.R. Penck on May 2, 2017 in Zurich. The foundation’s current retrospective exhibition in Saint-Paul de Vence until June 18 will therefore be the last major exhibition to take place during Penck's lifetime. This major artist of the twentieth century lived many lives through different characters, from East Germany to West Germany. He reinvented himself and reinvented his art, as if it were to be the beginning of painting, the beginning of new forms and new languages, both ancient and original. A painter, sculptor and musician, his current exhibition is full of invention, movement and energy. They share his universe and his truth with us. The Fondation Maeght joins in sorrow with his family, his friends and Michael Werner whose loyalty was profound. We pay tribute to this exceptional artist and thank him for allowing, through his works, the experience of an art whose vitality encourages us to take the first steps to discover, as he wished, unknown lands.
